Nimble Streamer - How Good is it?

 
Nimble Streamer is delivered as an application for Linux, Windows and MacOS,  with Azure cloud virtual machine as a deployment option. Its basic scenarios include streaming from live sources, streaming from VOD files and cache-aware HTTP re-streaming. For live streaming it takes RTMP, RTSP, MPEG-TS and Icecast as input and produces MPEG-DASH, HLS, RTMP, RTSP, MPEG-TS and Icecast. VOD is available as MP4 transmuxing to HLS and MPEG-DASH. MPEG-DASH output is supported in live and VOD modes. Also, WMSPanel, the developer company for Nimble Streamer, is an associate member of DASH-IF.

Nimble Streamer also covers progressive download for multiple formats, with seeking capabilities for HTML5 and Flash playback.HTTP re-streaming covers HLS, MPEG-DASH, HDS and SmoothStreaming.

Nimble Streamer can be used as a source for peer-to-peer media streaming. Nimble Streamer is free Open Source, standards-based media server, boasts full HLS feature-set; with support for HLS streaming, aliasing, and even AES-128 encryption. If the media player supports the HLS feature, WMSPanel says that the WMSPanel supports it. 


Nimble Streamer is free; but more advanced controls are available with their Web-based control panel, called the WMSPanel. The company has excellent pre-sales technical support, something we've never seen with much larger software developers. The WMSPanel team provides amazing assistance to customers and developers, and so far, we're finding the WMSPanel to be an excellent solution.

We're currently performing development of several security plugins, to test Nimble's API in the following areas:

a)Stream Control (start, stop, pause)
b)Aliasing
c)Encryption

We found that the aliasing is applied to specific applications; typical servers have a single application for each type of streaming; for example:

a)Live
b)On-demand

EMS and Wowza Media Server, permit publishers to apply aliasing to every stream, making it more difficult to discover, share and access protected content. By only applying aliasing to applications, WMSPanel has less built-in security for individual streams; but with the included hot-link protection, it is possible to protect every stream from unauthorized viewing. We are attempting to use the hot-link protection together with a custom script, as a way of creating stream-specific aliasing on WMSPanel. If successful, we'll update this review immediately. But given the fact that application-specific aliasing and encryption, as a combined solution, might be sufficient to prevent 99% of all compromises, WMSPanel is probably secure enough for most sites. WMSPanel is headquartered in Primor'ye, Russian Federation; and in our experience, we've never seen or heard of a Russian company making such a monumental contribution to media technology.

If our analysis of WMSPanel finds that their claims are true, the resulting impact on the streaming media industry, will be profound.  In a world where Adobe considers the contributions of small publishers too unprofitable to warrant attention, WMSPanel is bringing to the market, the most affordable HLS technology on the planet.
